FAQ

How do I use the DownUnder Board™ and what does it train you to do?

Using the DownUnder Board is simple. Grip it (the board) and rip it.

The DownUnder Board is to be used between your feet as you train your swing. Grip the board with your feet while you take half swings or full swings, either practice swings or while hitting balls. Use it on the range during practice sessions or pre-round warm-ups, or even in your basement or backyard. Use the short sides to improve chipping, pitching, and even putting as well.

Proper ground usage—which the DownUnder Board naturally trains—keeps the body down and in the shot, and provides resistance for the body to rotate around, through, and beyond the strike zone. Using the ground in the way that the DownUnder Board trains you to do is a master move associated with the best golfers in history.

The best golfers in the world understand that you don’t just exert a vertical pressure down into the ground. The key is to also use a horizontal force. This is the feeling of squeezing the board with your feet, not just downward, but inward.

Vertical AND Horizontal pressure puts a deeper push of force into the ground. The great ball strikers use the footwork and legs down AND inward. They used the ground powerfully while at the same time keeping a stable lower body. Power and Control. A perfect combination. You can’t see this with your eyes, however. You have to feel it for yourself. This is why the DownUnder Board is proven to help PGA Tour Champions and beginners alike.

The DownUnder Board naturally improves your stance and posture, keeps your body down and in the shot, keeps you balanced, keeps you from swaying side to side, and provides resistance for the upper body to turn and rotate around, through, and beyond the strike zone.

In the short game, the DownUnder Board trains the lower body to be stable and quiet while chipping, pitching, or even putting.  Having this stable lower body base will help you relax your hands and arms in the short game.  Use the short ends of the board for short game training.

Purchase of the DownUnder Board includes exclusive access to Video Lessons by Bradley Hughes for instruction on the DownUnder Board, the many benefits it provides, and why it will improve your game. A short preview video is available on the Home page.

Is there a training routine you recommend?

Full Swing — When just beginning your training with the DownUnder Board, start out with taking practice swings without hitting the golf ball.  Start these practice swings with the board slowly, first half practice swings, then 3/4 swings, then your standard full swing. This is a great way to start any range session to loosen up and to begin activating the lower body for stability and power. Ultimately, you will hit balls with the Board. The Board will work with your swing naturally, especially when it is slightly wider than your normal stance. You will naturally apply pressure to the board — you don’t have to consciously do it. We want to train and ingrain a feel, not a conscious thought. In the backswing, you will get weight on the trail foot in part by pushing your lead foot into the front end of the board. Then, through the downswing to impact and finish, you will get your weight on your lead foot by pushing your trail foot into the back end of the board. This improves your footwork, keeps you from early extending or jumping up, and can help prevent an over-the-top swing plane. On the range, switch back and forth between hitting with the board and not. Having the Board between the feet and hitting balls adds more intensity into the legs and feet than would be available without its presence. Feedback of the golf muscles are now at full strength. The golfer learns just how intense and dominant ground forces can and should be. You’re using resistance that you are creating in the ground with the Board to relax the arms and shoulders and will use that resistance in the ground to rotate the upper body around, through, and beyond the strike zone. This will give you power but keep you down and in the shot. You’ll compress the ball with your irons. Training regularly with the DownUnder Board, you’ll achieve the purpose, which is to remove the Board but maintain the feeling that it is there, the “Ghost Board Effect.” Use for 10-25 reps regularly, either at home or at the course.

Chipping, pitching, and putting — The emphasis is on stability in the lower body, which will allow you to relax your upper body. Again, this will happen naturally. Tension is inevitable and necessary in any golf shot, so instead of having it in your arms and shoulders, put it in your feet and legs.

Which DownUnder Board should I get?

The 2.0 Tour Edition is length-adjustable and thus ideal for training with any club in the bag and by golfers of all sizes and abilities, from juniors to PGA Tour Professionals. The 2.0 model can also be set to flare your feet and can be compacted for ease of travel.

The original three board bundle (Black + White + Blue) can also be used with any club in the bag and by golfers of all sizes and abilities.

If you are interested in just one of the original DownUnder Boards, take your personal stance width into consideration. Remember that the board is designed to be at least slightly wider than your normal stance. A board that is wider than your normal stance has more impact in training the pelvic abductor muscles to stay in the shot through the ground and leg support. In general, the Black Board is ideal for driver, woods, hybrids, and long irons and the White Board is perfect for medium-to-short irons. The Blue Board is ideal for junior golfers, for adults training to hit pure wedges, and for smaller players looking to work their way up to training with longer boards. The short ends of all the DownUnder Boards are ideal for chipping, pitching, and putting. All the boards will provide benefit, so no worries mate!

The most important thing is to train with the DownUnder Board to get the feeling that it provides in the feet and legs.

Is the DownUnder Board™ patented?

I flare my lead foot. Will the DownUnder Board still improve my game?

Absolutely yes. Those who prefer to flare their feet will favor the DownUnder Board 2.0 Tour Edition, which is length adjustable and also allows you to set the board for a flared setup. The original DownUnder Board can also be used with a flared lead foot. Many students who flare their lead foot in their normal swing also keep it flared while using the DownUnder Board. Other students who flare their lead foot in their normal swing choose to use a square setup while training with the DownUnder Board and then go back to the flared foot setup when the board is gone. Both work great. The key is to ingrain the feel that the DownUnder Board provides.
